Best Kept Secret
If you have spent any time in the Town of Ajax the one thing that you notice is the rapid growth. Whether it is new homes, new schools, new roads, or new businesses opening their doors, Ajax is definitely the place to be.
The numerous events that Ajax is host to; Ribfest, Homeweek, Taste of Ajax, Canada Day Celebrations and Fireworks at Ajax Downs to name just a few, require a lot of people power helping to keep things in order.
The best-kept secret in Ajax is that those people are not employees, they are volunteers. Volunteers who contribute to community development by committing time and energy for the benefit of the community, the benefit of the environment or the benefit of individuals outside of their own family. It is so hard not to be impressed with the huge effort, commitment and contribution of Ajax volunteers.
In Ajax it isn’t just events that volunteers are needed for, in speaking with Melanie Stewart, the Executive Director of Big Brothers and Sisters Ajax-Pickering, an agency that specializes in providing mentoring programs for children (5-14yrs) she says “volunteers are an integral part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency, without them we could not run our many programs. We rely on adult mentors (individuals over age 18) to connect, and spend time with the children in the program being a positive role model. Our research has shown that children who have a mentor are more likely to attend post-secondary education and less likely to engage in negative behaviors.”
Ajax has various community agencies like Big Brothers and Sisters that rely on volunteers to help with their programs or events. Volunteering is about giving, contributing, and helping other individuals and the community at large, it is duty without concern for financial gain. So when you get a chance, get involved help at an event or help with a community program.
Volunteering is a great way to challenge yourself, meet new people, and to feel good about yourself! So Lets spread the word, this is one secret that we don’t want to keep people from knowing!!!!!!

What do you Want in life? What do you DESIRE?
What do you want in life? What do you desire? These are the questions that many do not ask themselves. It is amazing that most people go through life just wasting time. What I mean by that is most do not have a purpose or desire, one that is more than a paycheck. According to the Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, a purpose is the feeling of being determined to do or achieve something, the aim or goal of a person, what a person is trying to do, become. Let me make it more specific, a purpose is a goal that someone is (feeling) determined to achieve. A desire is defined as something that you want or wish for. It is what gets you up every day, excited to start the day. Most Youth’s go to school because they have to. They often do poorly academically and struggle with people in their lives. There are very few that get excited about education in that knowledge is something that can and will get them to achieve their dreams. Adults are often no different. They go to work to pay their bills, but their purpose stops there. It is not hard to find those adults; they are the ones who complain about life, their job, their boss, etc. A purpose has to be so important that it gets you up every day, do what you have to do, ignore negative people in your way and just do it. For those who feel that life has dealt them a bad card, make the commitment to use your challenges to create an opportunity. Use your mind to create a very clear picture of what you want your life to look like. Including where you want to live? What do you want to do for a career? What financial status you want? Do you want to travel? What is your dream vehicle? Dream BIG, determine to do what it takes to get there, without violating the rights of others or the law.
You can create the life your want, regardless of the environment you come from or what you have. If you read about successful people in history, they all have a story. The story usually starts with coming from an underprivileged family or growing up in a community that has little to offer, even some have been in trouble with the law, and many have disabilities and were told that they would never achieve anything. You see, people use their experiences to do one of two things, continue to live their lives based on their past and, therefore, create their present reality, or make the decision to do what it takes to change their future. No one will do it for you. It has to come from within. You and only you have to determine your purpose and make it so clear that you mind sees it as a picture. It has to be so clear that you dream about it all the time. Then you have to create a feeling of excitement for what you want, then and only then will your reality start to change. You see, when you really know what you want, you start to notice opportunities to present to you as actions that will get you to your purpose. It might be to enroll in an educational program, or apply for a job that you are not quite qualified for, however, know that you will do what it takes to be qualified; it might be just getting up out of bed to look for a job. What is your appearance like? Take some time to dress the part of success, remove the ball cap and jeans, be presentable and go the extra mile for people, especially at school and work. You see, our reality is based on our belief of what we do or do not deserve. What we tell ourselves becomes our reality. Start today, tell yourself who you are, the person that you want to be as if you are already there. Believe that you deserve to be that person, and then get into action and be that person. Don’t let others determine you future, it is your future, and you have a purpose to fulfill.
